Final thoughts

Show the interviewers the best version of you!

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

Test taken: Drawing test on the day

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

In my subject interview I presented a portfolio of work (10-20 pieces of artwork) to a relatively poker-faced set of interviewers. I was expected to talk through my creative process and showed my sketchbook to that end. For my general interview, I had a very nice chat with two fellows not related to architecture - they were very kind and welcoming, and not scary at all !

How did you prepare for your interviews?

I took what I wrote in my personal statement and expanded everything, making sure I revised lots of useful information and prepared facts that would show my suitability. For instance, in my personal statement I said I’m interested in politics and architecture, and so I researched this further. I also used the university’s interview advice online.

If you took a test, how did you prepare?

Practised drawing from life (life drawing classes) and practised different methods of representing space.

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Back yourself completely - whatever unique, weird and wonderful elements of yourself you have, show those off! Don’t worry too much about extra-curricular achievements like DofE or community work for the sake of looking good on personal statement, instead focus on what you’re really about!
