Final thoughts

Show you can work with new information

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

I had 2 interviews, both with 2 interviewers. The first was based on a source I’d had two weeks to analyse, the second on my personal statement with a focus on my EPQ and coursework.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

The source was based on using primary sources to construct a spacial history of a large city.

The second interview was based on nationalisms and how they differ as that was the focus of my coursework etc, it also looked into the relation between pre modernity and modernity.

How did you prepare?

The Student Room for information. I watched a mock interview on the Emmanuel College page. I emailed the head of a school near mine who I’d heard did history at Cambridge and got a mock interview.

Then just a lot of reading around the source and my own personal statement and I tried to practice thinking abstractly.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

Just demonstrate that even if you’re stuck you’re willing to try really hard to think your way out of it.
