Final thoughts

Challenging in a good way!

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

3 interviews all on one day. We were waiting around with all the applicants and there was a film on the TV. Some people were reading books/notes. A 3rd year student came to collect me and bring me to wait outside each room on a chair at my time.

1. 1 interviewer; 2. 2 interviewers; 3. 1 interviewer

I can’t recall the durations but they weren’t super long - 10-20mins possibly?

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

1. Maths interview - quite hard but I talked aloud and went through it step by step with encouragement

2. Biology - again, getting me to work things out from first principles- not requiring extra knowledge than what I’d learn in class. They weren’t looking for someone who has swallowed a text book, but someone who can think logically and use what they know. They’re not going to penalise you if it’s clear you haven’t been taught something.

3. Going over my personal statement - more typical medicine interview questions about my interest in the subject.

How did you prepare?

I was very lucky in that my school organised some mock interviews with biology teachers and gave us feedback. I had a book each for preparing for the UCKAT and BMAT. I also showed a lot of people my personal statement including my parents and teachers.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

I actually quite enjoyed my interview here (compared to some at other medical schools) - it was interesting, challenging (in a good way) and satisfying when the interviewers led you to work something out.
