Bach Chorale exercises; knowing personal statement content
Try to enjoy it and be yourself
Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.
Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.
My interview was in December, and consisted of two interviews, plus a short
The first interview lasted maybe 20 minutes, and was a general one - the interviewer asked me about my hobbies, extra-curricular activities, my work ethic, that sort of thing. Then there was a short test, which was a Bach chorale, with little bits blanked out. It was made clear that we should just try our best, and that it wasn't too important.
Finally, I had my subject interview. We discussed lots of different things about music, just going wherever the conversation took us. He was very pleasant, and the discussion was actually quite enjoyable. After that, I had to harmonize a short melody at the keyboard (with his guidance), then identify different chords and cadences that he played on the piano.
The general one was exactly that - general. More about me and seeing how passionate I really am about my subject. The subject one was actually sort of fun! We just got to talk about music for an hour or so, it didn't really feel very serious or scary or much like an interview at all.
I did a couple of Bach chorale exercises beforehand, but that was something we were already doing in
Don't bother going overboard with preparation - just be yourself, and let your enthusiasm for your subject shine through. Try and enjoy it! It can actually be quite fun.
