Final thoughts

Don't stress about answering a question right away; it's more important to get to the answer step by step.

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

In my chemistry-focused interview, I worked through a maths/chemistry problem with one interviewer and a biology/maths problem to produce a graph with the other. I couldn't get to the answers straight away (you're not meant to be able to) but we worked through the problems step by step with them giving more information to make me think about it differently and get to an answer.

In my biology interview we looked at several short problems - some of which were new and others from the A Level syllabus. I was only asked one question about something I mentioned in my personal statement and it was quite broad. This interview was quite relaxed

How did you prepare for your interviews?

I revised first year A Level content, especially topics that I mentioned in my personal statement, and reread books / looked over the online courses I put in my personal statement.

I had an interview at a different university before which was really helpful in reducing nerves and a mock interview at my sixth form.

I think the revision of content was most helpful as it gave a basis for some of the problems we worked on.

If you took a test, how did you prepare?

Revises relevant content from GCSE and did timed past papers, I figured out which sections were hardest for me so I could spend more time on stronger topics during the exam

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Try not to stress about the interview and it's more important that you can take steps in the right direction to the answer than to be able to answer it immediately. Try to think out loud so that the interviewers can understand your thought processes and help you.
