Final thoughts

Don't worry about getting the answer wrong

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

2 interviews, each with 2 academics in one of the academic’s rooms. Approx. half an hour each. The first half of the first interview consisted of more ‘thinking’ questions as opposed to ones with direct answers. The second half was direct questions about Chemistry. The second interview consisted of all biology questions.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

First interview: first half consisted of open-ended questions. I never got any of the answers ‘right’ but was prompted towards what the interviewer wanted.

Second half consisted of A-Level Chemistry questions, about acids, for example. I was able to answer everything straight away as it was directly from my A-level chemistry course.

Second interview: all biology questions. I was asked to analyse a 3D model and a drawing of a cell with lots of stuff going on inside. I also had to design an experiment - something about genetic engineering - and interpret a graph.

This was okay but felt like I just kind of blabbed for the designing experiment and describing what was happening in the cell parts and spoke really fast because I was nervous and wasn’t sure if what I was saying was right. I also didn’t do A-Level Bio (only did AS) - I looked briefly at an A level CGP guide beforehand and this definitely helped.

How did you prepare?

Just going through A Level CGP guides.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

I truly think the interviewers know whether someone is the right candidate for them or not - so no need to worry if you feel you did badly or didn’t know how to answer some questions.
