Final thoughts

Don't let interview stereotypes/'horror stories' put you off - they're not that bad

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

I waited with other prospective applicants in the college bar (which I had to find myself) and once there was greeted by current students who showed me to my interview room when it was time.

I had two interviews, one about half an hour after the other had finished in the afternoon of the same day. My first interview only had one interviewer who was very friendly and it was more a discussion of my personal statement. The second interview had two interviewers, a pen and paper and was more about answering academic questions.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

The first one was focused on what I’d mentioned on my personal statement, I did an EPQ on genetics so there was a lot about that (I got the feel it was the interviewer’s speciality), mixed with that there were some theory questions most of which I didn’t know and had to guess or apply my knowledge. They also talked about work experience I had mentioned and there was one maths based question. The second interview was less discussion and more verbally testing my knowledge, most of which was slightly out of the scope of what I’d done in school.

How did you prepare?

I had one trial interview at school (but my school had never had any applicants for that course so it was more of a guess by them as well). Apart from that just what I could find on Google.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

I have a lot of friends who let the reputation of Oxbridge interviews put them off from applying but having experienced it I don’t think they’re as dramatic as, at least, I was told.
