Final thoughts

Don't worry if they don't seem to be impressed - you don't know what they're thinking!

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

3 interviews over 2 days. Firstly a friendly pastoral interview (15 minutes) with someone not necessarily in your department. Then two biological based interviews with department academics (two per interview) each interview around 30 minutes.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

It was like been thrown into the deep end of a swimming poolbut they do give you things to cling to. My first question was to analyse the results of a genetic study and discuss the gene in question. I was then asked a maths question to which I gave the answer straight away but they wanted to see my working so made me work from the start. Then I was asked a more medical based question that required fundamental biology knowledge. Some of the questions really challenged me as they were surprising contexts - it’s tough, you won’t be able to prepare.

How did you prepare?

Got a good night's sleep. Honestly there’s nothing you can do to prepare. Mock interviews are also good but more to prepare you for the pressure than the content itself.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

Try not to say anything that could be thought of as a joke - in an interview context it doesn't come across great. Also don’t worry if they don’t look impressed, I was lucky to impress just one of my interviewers who was the one who pulled me out of both the winter and summer pools, who is now my DOS. It only takes one person so don’t worry if one or two of your interviewers don’t seem to like you.
