Final thoughts

Apply! Say what you think in interview & don't be put off by stereotypes

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

I arrived the previous evening and was given a room for the night since the interview was at 9am the following morning. Had breakfast in the college buttery before getting ready for the interviews.

There were 2 interviews with 2 interviewers in each. Each lasted 20 minutes with there being 2 questions in each (so 10 minutes per question). No tests but that may have changed.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

All very mathematical based. No questions on personal statement/generic interview questions. One question was based on a theoretical, abstract problem that required intergration. Felt quite intense and was mentally draining but good fun at the same time.

How did you prepare?

Contacted current students with regard to what college to apply to. Was probably the most useful resource, to be honest, as all the official Cambridge sources basically insinuated all colleges are the same.

Went for an open day to get a feel for the place which I would advise in doing. Gets you to think about whether you actually want to live here or not.

My sixth form college put on mock interviewswhich I found helpful. I would say even if yours don't, even getting a family friend to practice with you is really helpful.

And lastly, revise your maths skills. I probably should have done it more but am glad I even did it a little. Would have left me stumped otherwise.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

During the interview, say what you are thinking. Even if it's not what the interviewer is expecting, they want to see that you're actively approaching a problem rather than sitting there panicking. They also give you prods in the right direction but can only do that if they know where you're going in the first place.

Don't think that everyone who comes to Cambridge is either posh or spends all their days in the library. Most people I've met are like home friends and you get loads of opportunity to meet like-minded people.

You can't get in if you don't apply (cliche but is true nonetheless).
