Final thoughts

Don't worry about being wrong - think out loud

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

2 interviews, each with one Professor. I’d say each was about 20 minutes. There was a gap of roughly an hour between them. I was given directions in the Porters’ Lodge for finding the interview room. I was not set a test - though all NatSci applicants (university-wide) sit a test before being invited to interview.

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

Most of the time was taken up with them setting a problem and walking me through in places where I got stuck - so they weren’t testing content, it was much more like teaching me. We spoke briefly about something I'd been reading and a little about how I thought I'd find the Cambridge experience.

How did you prepare?

Practice interview with a teacher - it really helps to practice thinking and working through a problem out loud.

Looking back, what advice would you give to your past self?

Don’t worry about sounding stupid - it’s much better to show you can think about a problem than only saying the few things you absolutely know are right.
