Final thoughts

They want to see how you respond to their teaching style more than anything so don’t panic about getting something wrong

Remember this advice isn't official. There is no guarantee it will reflect your experience because university applications can change between years. Check the official Cambridge and Oxford websites for more accurate information on this year's application format and the required tests.

Also, someone else's experience may not reflect your own. Most interviews are more like conversations than tests and like, any conversation, they are quite interactive.

Interview Format

Test taken: Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA)
Number of interviews: 5
Time between interviews: 5 spread over 3 days, two days with two interviews with a few hours between each, one day with only one interview
Length of interviews: 25-30 minutes
Online interview: No

What happened in your interview? How did you feel?

I had an inorganic, organic, and physical interview at my host college which each contained two 15 minute questions, then two interviews at other colleges which each contained an organic, an inorganic, and a physical question. Most had some kind of visual aid, and there was between 2 and 4 academics in the room with me. I was only asked one question about my personal statement right at the very end of one of the interviews

How did you prepare for your interviews?

Looked back over A-Level content  and a bit of the current chemistry news, e.g. in New Scientist, or Chemistry World magazine

If you took a test, how did you prepare?

Only one or two practice papers for the TSA, but I was told on the open day that the test was still in trial for my course so wouldn’t hold much if any weight

What advice would you give to future applicants?

Think out loud, know that there isn’t a right answer, and that if/when you get something wrong they will set you on the right direction. They want to see how you respond to their teaching style more than anything so don’t panic about getting something wrong
